Selma Hodges

June 9, 1936 — February 12, 2021

Selma (Sutton) Hodges, 84, born in Rockwood, Tennessee, went to be with our Lord on February 12, 2021, at Baptist Health Corbin. She was fondly known by Nanny to many, not just her grandchildren. Selma was a dedicated wife and mother of five who enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. She was strong in her opinions and always made herself available-whether for some advice, emotional support, or a "mom" lecture. She spent decades playing piano in church and was steadfast in her faith. Selma was a proponent of knowing your history and had a knowledge of history and politics that few could (or would) argue with. A lifelong gardener, she had a special talent for growing beautiful things. Her hydrangeas were some of the most magnificent around. Whether it was sweet pickles, sweet tea, pound cake, or seven-minute frosting, Nanny made food that triggered a memory and brought you happiness the moment it hit your lips. No one ever went hungry on her watch. She could be the loudest voice in the room or the quietest observer, but you never doubted her presence and that presence will be so very missed. Our family will miss her laugh, her passion for ancestry, and her embarrassment and subsequent complaint every time her husband caught her in one of his practical jokes. We will miss hearing things like "Bless Her/His Heart" and "God Love It" and being called angel, sweetie, or Nanny's baby. The grandkids especially will miss teasing her about who her favorite is, being bribed with "Yankee Dimes" (a hug or kiss) to do the dusting, and hearing about life in the Black Star Coal Camp and why it was her favorite place to ever live. Most of all, we will miss her hugs and the knowledge that no matter what, we always had a place in Nanny's house. She is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband, Stuart Hodges; children, Barbara Carter, Debra Coleman (Johnny), Robin Lamb (David), Wesley Hodges, and Jeanne Perry (Donald); grandchildren, Kelley Ealy, Beth Hill (Greg), Adam Carter, Jake Perry (Wendy) and the late Chloe Lamb; great-grandchildren, Logan Hill, Devon Hill, and Mackenna Hill; and numerous relatives and friends who loved her very much. She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Luda (Givens) Sutton, siblings, Wilma Moore, Buddy Sutton and Charles Sutton and parents-in-law, C.O. "Doc Jim" and Jessie (Rhyne) Hodges. The family would like to extend their appreciation for all of the prayers, concerns, and calls to us during this time. Graveside services will be held in Selma's beloved childhood community of Blackstar at Black Star Cemetery, Alva, Kentucky on February 22, 2021 at 1:00 PM. All are welcome. The Arnett & Steele Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Pineville is honored to serve the Hodges family. Light a candle of remembrance and sign the guest register at www.arnettsteele.com.
