Sammie Hyatt, Jr., 93 of Pineville, went to be with our Lord on Monday, July 13, 2026, at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in London, Kentucky. He was born in Dillon, South Carolina on September 4, 1932, the son of Sam Hyatt, Sr. and Jessie Wilkes Hyatt.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Loretta Palmatier; brothers, Ed Hyatt, Cliff Hyatt, and Ernest Hyatt; brothers-in-law, James Freeman, Troy Freeman, Boyd Freeman, and Chester Freeman; and sisters-in-law, Cozette Freeman, Rose Lee Graves, Imogene Freeman, and Janice Freeman.
Left to mourn his passing are his loving wife of 59 years, Polly Freeman Hyatt; their son, Ronald and Lisa Hyatt; grandchildren, Dustin and Elise Hyatt, Dalton and Autumn Hyatt, Mackenzie and Michael Cupp, and Mikayla and Ben Collett; great-grandchildren, Gatlin Lee Hyatt, Elijah Keith Hyatt, Mara Lynne Hyatt, Jace Michael Cupp, and one on the way; sister, Lila Mae Mumford; brothers-in-law, Junior and Sissy Freeman, Raymond and Flo Freeman, Clarence and Debbie Freeman, and Johnny Freeman; sister-in-law, Nellie and Tony Freeman; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Sammie spent his life as a truck driver, a coal strip miner, and a mechanic. He could work circles around men half his age well into his 70’s. His CB handle was “Magic Man”, and he could work magic with any piece of equipment that he operated.
Sammie was a great oak tree in the lives of many, and a faithful servant of his Lord and Savior. He was the oldest member of Fuson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. He loved his church, his pastor, and all his church family.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at Fuson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Clint Goodin, Rev. Mark Hunter, and Rev. Waylon Hunter presiding. Music will be provided by Barry Barton. Burial will follow at the Fuson Chapel Cemetery in Little Clear Creek. Pallbearers will be Dustin Hyatt, Dalton Hyatt, Michael Cupp, Ben Collett, Jason Freeman, Sean Freeman, and Todd Freeman.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful nursing staff at Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Amedisys Home Health Care, especially Alyson.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 1:00 PM until the funeral hour at Fuson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
