Age 74

Robert Earl Lay passed away November 4, 2008 in Norfolk Hospital. He was a native of Newcomb TN and the son of the late Arkley Lay and Easter Gladys Richmond. He was a retired Senior Chief from The US Navy after twenty three years and he was retired from C.A.C.I. and finished his working career at Serco. He was a member and deacon of Norview Baptist Church of Norfolk and a Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his wife of fifty three years, Hassie Jean Chumley Lay, one daughter, Donna Sue O'Sullivan and husband Kevin of Chesapeake, two sons, R. Michael Lay and wife Donna Kay of VA Beach and Steven L. Chumley and wife Kathleen of Chesterfield. He is also survived by one brother, Rev. Donald E. Lay of Jellico, TN., nine grandchildren: Matthew O'Sulivan, Mason O'Sullivan, M. Christopher Lay, Nikki Lay, Brittany Chumley, George Chumley, Elijah Chumley, Joshua Lay, and Zacherie Lay, and one great-grandchild Wyatt Lay. He was pre-deceased by a son Donald E. Lay and a sister Jolene Oaks.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, November 7 at 1 PM at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Kempsville Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 6-8 PM. The family will receive friends again Sunday from 6-8 PM at Reece Funeral Home & Valley Chapel, Harrogate, TN & have a funeral service on Monday November 10 at 1 PM at Reece Funeral Home. Burial will follow in The Chumley Cemetery with full military honors provided by Tri-County Veterans Honor Guard.
