Phillip “Lucky” Holland

October 11, 1948 – October 16, 2025

Born in Harlan, Kentucky, Phillip “Lucky” Holland lived a life defined by grit and heart. Known simply as “Lucky,” because he survived many challenges with quiet strength and kindness.

Throughout his life, Lucky worked as a gravedigger, transmission mechanic, coal miner, and truck driver — each role reflecting his incredible work ethic, versatility, and pride in a job well done. While hauling cars across the country, Lucky made thousands of enduring friendships with people who never forgot him.

Family was at the center of Lucky’s life. He was a proud father to Lora Holland, Amy Towle, James Holland, Autumn Holland, and Amber Holland, and he also lovingly raised two children who were not his by blood but fully his by heart. During the last years of his life, Lucky devoted himself to raising his granddaughter all on his own. With limited means but endless love, he made sure she had everything she needed.

Lucky is survived by his sisters Phyllis Knuckles and Ester Hatfield; 13 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry his love, witty humor, and lessons forward for generations to come. A living grandparent of one of his children still asks after him, a testament to the deep and lasting impression he left on all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis Holland and Dora Napier, and his siblings Marlin “Drake” Holland, James “Jim-Matt” Holland, Charlotte Smith, Marcella Steele, and Lynn Holland.

Those who knew Lucky remember his loyalty and his unwavering generosity. His life reminds us that greatness comes from the way we live, love, and show up for others. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and the love he left behind.

A celebration of Lucky’s life will be held at a later date, where friends and family can gather to share memories and honor the man who could talk to anyone.
