Oscar Leo Phipps

January 10, 1926 — February 13, 2014

Oscar Leo Phipps, 88, formerly of Greasy Creek, passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at the Tri-State Health and Rehab Center, Harrogate. He was born in Stearns, KY on January 10, 1926, the son of the late Dide and Esther Kidd Phipps. Oscar was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, he was a good Christian man who was saved at the age of 20. He lived his life by the Ten Commandments. He served in the United State Navy during World War II and was in four invasions. He worked in the Coal mines on a Continuous Miner. Oscar was also a carpenter and builder who was a friend to many and was a shining light to the Greasy Creek Community. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene M. Phipps; and two sisters, Norma Dunaway and Orange Brown. Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Marjerie Lenaghan Phipps; his children, William 'Billy' Phipps, Brenda Phipps, Sharon Phipps, Robert 'Bobby' Phipps, Janice Phipps Brown and Paul Phipps; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchildren; Marjerie's children, Susan Debra Brooks, Danny Mark Ellis, Melissa G. Ellis, Gregory Phillip Ellis and Shirley A. Mattox; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and one expected great-grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Services will be at 11:00 AM Monday at the Arnett & Steele Funeral Chapel with Rev. Mike Brooks and Mr. Jay Steele. Music will be by the Ebenezer Church Choir. Burial will be in the Hammonds Cemetery at Flat Lick. Pallbearers will be Jerry Marcum, Jeff Peterson, Timothy Gregory, Steven Phipps, Justin Mays and Terry Carroll. The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 PM at the Arnett & Steele Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Pineville, which is honored to serve the Phipps Family.
