Orville Leo Engle, 84 Orville Leo Engle, 84, passed away on Thursday, January 17, 2008 at the home of his son Brent in Harrogate, TN. Engle was born in Kettle Island, KY on March 22, 1923 the son of the late John Robert and Litha Grant Engle. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pineville for many years. He was a graduate of Pineville High School where he was a model student and one of the best athletes in the history of the school. From 1942 ? 1946, he served in the U.S. Marines and fought in the Battle at Iwo Jima. Engle graduated of Union College with a degree in Physical Education, while in college he participated in Track and received several honors. Mr. Engle began teaching at Pineville High School in 1952 where he taught Health and PE and coached every sport offered, football, basketball and track. In the 1970?s he became the first girl?s basketball coach and when he wasn?t teaching or coaching, he was officiating. He spent his summers operating the Pineville swimming pool and taught swimming lessons for over 20 years. In February, 2005, the Pineville High School Gymnasium was named in honor of Orville Engle. He greatly loved his family, students, their families, all the staff and personnel where he worked through the years and his Christian life and heritage. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Jean Bailey Engle, sister, Irene McDow and brothers, Raymond Engle and J.C. Engle. Survivors include his sons and their wives, Mark Bailey and Deborah Engle of Maryville, TN and Brent Dowell and Sonya Engle of Harrogate, TN; grandsons, Jason Carl Engle and wife, Erin, Eric Christopher Engle, Joshua Ryan Engle, Jacob Aaron Engle, Kyle Bailey Engle and Cameron Neal Engle; great-granddaughter, Emma Clair Engle, sister-in-law, Lois Daphene Engle of Middlesboro and Inez Bailey of Arjay, nieces, Jay Genia Hoskins and husband, Carmel of Gallion, OH and Jan Evans and husband, Rick of Middlesboro, and Pat Smith and husband, Gerald of Winchester, TN; nephews, Woody Bailey and wife, Jean of Speedwell, TN, Gary Bailey of Middlesboro and Daryle Bailey of Arjay and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and special friends.
