Opal Miller Smith

Opal Miller Smith, 80 of Arjay went home to be with her Savior on December 2, 2015 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Opal, a daughter of the late Felix and Minnie Baker Miller, was born on October 23, 1935 and spent her entire life in the Big Jim and Blanche communities. She married Jack Smith in 1953 and was a loving homemaker for 62 years...no one ever left her kitchen hungry. In addition to her parents, Opal was preceded in death by her infant son, Jack Smith, Jr.; brothers, Charles, Ewell, John and Glenn; and sister, Faye Miller. Left to mourn her passing is her husband of 62 years, Jack Smith; her five children, Barbara Rutherford and husband, Jerry of Arjay, Deborah Woolum and husband, Willie of Georgetown, Johnny Smith and wife, Traci of Richmond, Kathy Harbin and husband, Bill, Jr. of Pineville, Mike Smith and wife, Robin of Pineville and very special friend who seemed like a daughter to her, Carolyn Gambrel of Pineville; sister, Maxine Newman and husband, Toby of Heidrick and sister-in-law, Pearlie Miller of Goshen, OH; fourteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be Saturday at 7:00 PM at the Arnett & Steele Funeral Home with a eulogy by Rev. John Neal and a message by Rev. David Asher. Special music will be by Randy Hensley and Benny Howard. Graveside services will be at 11:00 AM Sunday, December 6 at the Big Jim Cemetery with Rev. Jeremy Sanders. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the Pineville Community Hospital's Home Health Agency, and especially Mary, Regina and Sherry for their love and care given in Opal's time of need and to the Arnett & Steele Family for their friendship and caring for the family. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 4 until 7 PM at the Arnett & Steele Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Pineville, which is honored to be serving the Smith family.
