Maurine "Toots" Mills

June 21, 1930 — February 27, 2014

Maurine 'Toots' Mills, 83, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, February 27th, 2014 surrounded by loved ones at the Pineville Community Hospital. Toots was born June 21, 1930 to the late John and Kittreen Wilson Lefevers and was the eldest of 2 children. She and her sister June, also preceding her in death, grew up in the small community of Dorton Branch. Toots attended Dorton Branch Elementary School and Bell County High School. In 1953, she married her loving husband Asa Mills, preceding her in death as well. Toots has been a strong-willed, upholding and respectful lady, one of pride and dignity in spite of tragedies that occurred in her life. She lost 2 sons, Gregory Wayne Mills and Deloan Eversole Mills, at young ages and was a breast cancer survivor. She was an active member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Dorton Branch, serving on several committees and was one of many Golden Sunshine Girls WMU group. And actively involved in the Republican party for many years. She serve the residents of Bell County as a member of the 109 board for 9 years and was one of the longest serving election officers in Bell County, serving from 1976 to 2007. Toots was mother to Mike Mills and wife, Donna of Dorton Branch. Grandmother to Asa Mills and Amanda McGeorge, both of Dorton Branch. Great-Grandmother of Gage McGeorge, who has been one of the wonderful joys in her life. Aunt of 2 very special nieces, Louise Brock and husband, Ronnie, Debbie Gambrel and husband, Jim, and late, nephew Johnny Tuner. Half sister, Ruth Lefevers, half brother, Ralph Lefevers and a very special brother-in-law, Lavern Tuner. Special friends include Goldie Brock, Mary 'Did' Griffin, Ginger Nunley, Peggy and Jerry Centers, Ivory and Charlie Jackson, Pearl Ray Lefevers, Jennifer Jones, Joan Asher Cawood, Norma and Lora Akers, Jewell Myers, Jeff and Teresa Tingle, Joe Smith, the late Frieda Garland and Viola Harris. Toots was respected in her community and lovingly referred to as the 'Mayor' of Dorton Branch. She loved her community and her church. No one ever left her home hungry and was always welcomed with open arms. She will be remembered also as being 'firm but fair', a phrase of her own, well known to friends and family. She believed in hard work, good morals, ambition, and respect. An inspiration to those who knew and loved her, her wisdom and advice, spirit and energy will always be remember and missed. 'While we are mourning the loss of our loved one, others are rejoicing to meet her again.' Special thanks to friends and family for all your prayers. Thanks to the Pineville Community Hospital 1st floor staff and Dr. Talmadge Hays for taking such good care of her during her illness. And Thank You so very much to Louise and Debbie for all the running and everything you 2 have done for Granny through the years. Our family has truly been blessed to have been part of her life. In lieu of flower, as Toots would have wished, the family has requested donations to be made to Bethlehem Baptist Church and Dorton Branch Church of God. At her request, Toots is being cremated. A Celebration of Life will be held in honor of Toots at Bethlehem Baptist Church on Thursday, March 6th at 6:00 P.M. Family will receive friends Thursday beginning at 5 P.M. Presiding over the memorial service will be Pastor Jeff Tingle. All friends and family are encouraged to attend. 'She was as good as she was fair, None, none on earth above her!
