Kennis Akers, 89, of Pineville, passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at the Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Hospital. He was born in Kettle Island on October 11, 1919 a son of the late Charley and Lutisha Brock Akers. He was a United States Army Veteran having served during World War II. He was a PFC and was awarded a EANE Theater Campaign medal with 3 bronze stars and a good conduct medal. He was a believer in the Pentecostal Faith and had worked for a construction company as a crain operator. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Dorothy Frost Akers, sons, Dennis, Don E. and Douglas Wayne Akers, brothers and sisters, Edith Daugherty, Della mae Sutton, Roy, Oscar, Otis and Claude Akers. Survivors include his daughter, Wanda and Trevis Kidd, daughters-in-law, Sue Akers and Betsye Fay Akers; grandchildren, Sonja Whithrow, Shannon Caswell, Shevon Kidd and Jason Tong, Dennis Wayne Akers, Tammy Reeder and Shirley Dobbs; ten great-grandchildren and a host of special nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
