Johnson Mayes, age 77, of Speedwell, passed away May 18th. He was a member and deacon at Carr's Chapel Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the Korean War, a member of Masonic Lodge # 259 in Riverside California and a member of the Mechanics Union.

He enjoyed bowling and gardening and loved his family and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by parents: Jack and Minnie Bryant Mayes; brothers: Kelly Mayes and Conley Mayes; and sisters: Juanita Cooper, Wilma Lyman, and Margret Mayes.

Survivors include:

wife: Jessie Slover Mayes of Speedwell;

son: Jerry Johnson Mayes & wife Suzy of La Grande, Oregon;

brothers: Buford (& Janie) Mayes of Speedwell,

Dolly (& Delores) Mayes of Knoxville;

sister: Vita (& Dewayne) Weber of Ypsilanti, MI.;

grandchildren: Joshua and Elisha Mayes.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, May 22nd, 2006 at Reece Funeral Home & Valley Chapel with Rev. David Bolton & Rev. Mark Bayless officiating. Music by Carrs Chapel Choir & Brian Giles. Burial in the Yoakum Cemetery with full military honors by the United Veterans Honor Guard. Pallbearers: Joshua Beau Mayes, Elisha Brett Mayes, John David Mayes, Ben Mayes, Doug Mayes & Tim Weber. Honorary pallbearer: Buford Mayes, Dolly Mayes, Travis Mayes, Neil Ward & Bruce Ward. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Sunday at Reece Funeral Home & Valley Chapel. 423-869-3651.
