John L. Young

Young, 91 formerly of St. Creek, passed away Monday, February 16, 2015 at Laurel Heights Nursing Home in London. He was born at Balkan on October 25, 1923, a son of the late Johnnie and Jennie W. Young. John was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy and also served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel in 1990 and had worked as a coal miner. In addition to his parents, he was a devoted husband of 52 years to Carolyn Sue Buchanan Young, whom left this life in July 2009, and three sisters, Inez, Betty and Shirley. Survivors include his daughters, Melissa Smith and husband, Dennie, Mary Lou Young and Tammy Hatfield; sister, Geneva Chealander; 2 very special people in his life, Rhonda Henderson and family, and John C. Smith, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Services will be 1:00 PM Sunday at the Arnett & Steele Funeral Home chapel with Rev.Terrell Gibson. Music will be by Curt and Stephanie Eldridge. Burial will follow at Green Hills Memorial Gardens in Middlesboro with Dennie Smith, Bruce Smith, John Smith, Harvey Henderson, Curt Eldridge, Ken Lambert and Rob Helton serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Jerry Woolum and the staff of Laurel Heights Nursing Home. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 11 AM until 1 PM at the Arnett & Steele Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Pineville, which is honored to be serving the Young family.
