Jack Smith

A very special angel went home to be with his Lord and Saviour on April 24, 2018, Mr. Jack Smith, 84, of Arjay, KY passed this life at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, KY. Jack had been a coal miner from the age of 16. When he retired from mining he began raising a huge garden. He fed his family and people from many counties all around. People would come from nearby states to buy green beans and sugar snap peas. He will surely be missed by all. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Woodson and Viola Doan Smith; his wife of 62 years, Opal Miller Smith; a son, Jack Smith, Jr.; two brothers, two sisters, and a very special grandson, Jackie Rutherford. He is survived by five children, Barbara (Jerry) Rutherford of Arjay, KY; Deborah (Willie) Woolum of Georgetown, KY; Johnny (Tracie) Smith of Richmond, KY; Kathy (Bill, Jr.) Harbin of Pineville, KY, Michael (Robin) Smith of Pineville, KY and a very special 'daughter' Carolyn Gambrel of Pineville, KY; fourteen grandchildren, Jason and Ean Rutherford, Kim Brown, Krystal Maquire, Kendra Woolum, Katrina Bruno, Brooke Sanders, Kaci Ausmis, Kellie Smith, Trey and Tyler Harbin, Nicholas, Mallory and Dylan Smith and fourteen great-grandchildren with two more on the way; two brothers, Charles (Diane) Smith and Willie Joe (Nancy) Smith and three sisters, Ruth (Luther Thad) Daniels, Ellen Hooker and Betty Hensley. Visitation for Mr. Smith will begin on Thursday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM. A Eulogy will be given by Mr. Dennis Short with the funeral following with the Reverend Jeremy Sanders presiding. Special music will be presented by Jerry and Jason Rutherford, James M. Rutherford and Mitchell Williams. A graveside service will take place on Friday at 11:00 AM at the Big Jim Cemetery at Arjay with Rev. Jeremy Sanders presiding. Pallbearers will be Jason and Ean Rutherford, Trey and Tyler Harbin, Zach Ausmus and Willie Woolum. Arnett & Steele Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Pineville, is honored to serve the Smith Family.
