Irene VanHook Adams, 80, of Pineville, passed away on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington. Born in Lexington, KY on December 5, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Gretchen Lucas Van Hook. She was a very active member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was selected as Woman of the Year in 1970 by the Pineville Rotary Club and she served as Chairman of the Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival and all of its committees at one time or another. Irene ran the Pineville Youth Center for many years and was a very active part of the Pineville School system, assisting with cheerleading and sponsoring the majorette team. Irene was the founder of the ?Lighting of the Star Program, which began around 1971 and she authored the poem ?The Star.? She was very active member of the community and was involved in outreach programs throughout the community. After the death of her husband, she started the Coach Bill Adams Scholarship Fund, which will now be called the Coach Bill and Irene Adams Scholarship Fund. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three beloved dogs, Mindy, Jiggs and Daisy. She was the beloved mother of Benny Adams and Doug Adams and his wife, Cathy, grandchildren Mary Catherine Caruso, David Adams, Annalee Adams and Will Adams, brother-in-law, Fred Adams, sisters-in-law, Betty Adams and Juanita Adams Lunsford and her husband, Ray, special cousin, Dorothy Bunch, special friends are members of the Friendship Club and The Tuesday Morning Breakfast Club, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and too many other special friends to mention.
