Ernest Calvin Slusher

March 13, 1930 — June 14, 2015

Ernest Calvin Slusher, 85, of Pineville, passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2015 at Wesley Village in Wilmore, KY. He was born in Cary, KY on March 13, 1930 a son of the late Robert Edward and Ida Mae Jackson Slusher. Ernest grew up in Red Bird and was a graduate of the Red Bird Mission School. He was a member of the First Baptist Church for many years where he served as a Sunday School Teacher for over 50 years and as a Deacon for over 40 years, 20 years of which were as Chairman. Ernest served in the United States Army in the 45th Infantry Division during the Korean War. He graduated from Union College where he earned his Bachelor Degree and he did his graduate work at the University of Kentucky. Ernest worked at the Bell County School System for 41 years and began his teaching career at a one room school. He was a Principal for Sixteen years at Arjay, four years at Lone Jack, before ending his career in Central Administration as director of the Title I from for 21 years. He had also worked as a Historian for the Cumberland Gap National Park System. Active in the community, Ernest served on the Red Bird Mission Board and Clear Creek Baptist Bible College Board. He was also a member of Rotary Club, Gideon's International, 4-H Council and the Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival Board. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lucy Stevens and brothers, James Slusher, Arthur Slusher and Albert Benjamin Slusher. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mary LaMotte Slusher; children, Dr. Tina M. Slusher, Tim Slusher and wife, Pilar L. Slusher and Dr. Ida L. Slusher; grandchildren, Adrian M. Slusher and Andrew M. Slusher; sisters, Daisy M. Giles and Bobbye Jean Kitchener and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Services will be at 11:00 AM Thursday at the First Baptist Church, Pineville, with Dr. Rondald Howard. Music will be by J.C. Helton and Evylene Goodin. Burial will be in the Green Hills Memorial Gardens, Middlesboro. Pallbearers will be Adrian Slusher, Andrew Slusher, Robert Stevens, Ernest Stevens, David Gambrel and Carlos Muncy. Honorary pallbearers will be J.C. Helton, Tommy Collett, Dr. Everett Shaffer and the Men's Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 PM Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, Pineville.
