Ernest L. Carroll

Trooper Ernest L. Carroll, 87, of Pineville passed from this life on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at Saint Mary's Hospital in Knoxville. He was born in Harlan County on May 11, 1930, and was a son of the late Leslie L. and Jewell Reynolds Carroll. Ernest joined the United States Marine Corps when he was 19, and served his country for two years in Korea. He endured many hardships, as most soldiers do that have to face the battlefields, but never talked about them. He would only say he was 'one of the lucky ones who got to come back home', but we knew it was mothers prayers that brought him home. In 1954, Ernest joined the Kentucky State Police and worked the road for many years before becoming the Drivers License Examiner for Bell, Harlan and Knox Counties. He retired from duty in 1985 after 31 years of service to the Commonwealth of Kentucky. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 29 years, Marie Patterson Carroll, an infant son, Britt Carroll, and his brother-in-law, J.D. Oxford. Survivors include his son, Brady L. Carroll of Pineville; and his sister, Jacqueline Carroll Oxford of Tazewell, TN; as well as a host of many cousins and several friends. Funeral services will be 2:00PM Friday, November 3 at the Arnett & Steele Funeral Home with Rev. Travis Chumley. Burial will follow in the Carroll Family Cemetery at Ingram with full police honors by the Kentucky State Police Honor Guard, and full military honors by the Harlan Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Young, Curtis Pingleton, Steve Fuson, Donnie Allen, Dan Tuttle and Jimmy Young, Jr. The family will receive friends on Friday, after 12:30PM until the funeral hour at the Arnett & Steele Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Pineville, which is honored to be serving the Carroll family.
