Charles Smith

Charles E. Smith, 82, of Powell, TN, formerly of Pineville, passed away on Monday 28, 2011 at the Ben Atchley TN State Veterans Home in Knoxville, TN. He was born in Pineville on September 9,1929 a son of the late William Smith and Sally Valentine Engle. He attended Grace Baptist Church in Knoxville with his wife. Charles retired from the Army Special Forces after 20 years of service. While in the military, he served two tours of duty in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars and earned many awards including the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart and Air Medal. Various other accomplishments include Army Intelligence School, Special Warfare School, Jump Master School, several language schools and many other schools and training. He was an avid flyer and owned his own plane until a few years ago. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister and two brothers, Paul W. and Pearl Frank Smith. Survivors include his wife, Micki Gambrel Smith, daughters and their husbands, Paula and David Beeler and Teri and Phillip Cleek; grandsons, Brad Roberts, Westley Beeler and Drew Cleek; great-grandson, Matthew Roberts and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
