Coach Darwin Walters, 71 of Pineville passed away on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at the Pineville Community Hospital. He was born in Fourmile, KY on April 6, 1941 and was a the son of the late Arthur and Flora Ellis Walters. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Pineville and had graduated from Pineville High School in 1959 and majored in education and graduated from Cumberland College, beginning his teaching career in 1964 in Jefferson County and taught a number of years in Harlan County. In 1985 he came home to the Pineville School System and had served the school in many areas since that time. Coach Walters, most known for his love of sports, had become a staple of the Mountain Lion football team coaching staff for the entirety of his career at PHS and also was head coach of the Mountain Lions baseball and girls basketball teams at different times. Coach Walters was dedicated to the Maroon and Gold, had touched the lives of many young men and women during his career and was a much beloved figure, sparking many fond memories for Pineville High School alumni. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Joy Scherpf and Betty Edwards and an infant brother, Ancil Walters. Survivors include his children, Rhonda Gail Walters of Pineville and Brian K. Walters of Elizabethtown; his precious grandsons, who lovingly called him 'Pappy D', Tanner Walters and Tucker Walters; sister, Juanita Kelly and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many colleagues and friends.
