Alberta "Al" Cody Payne, 78, of Aiken, SC died August 26 at home. She was surrounded by her family and Hospice caregivers.

Al was the daughter of Lon and Cora Cody, of St. Charles, Virginia. She graduated from Middlesboro High School in 1950 and attended Lincoln Memorial University before she married Roger Payne at Lone Mountain, TN in 1952. Later that year they went to work for DuPont at the Savannah River Plant in Aiken, SC.

Al was always actively involved in community affairs, and she delivered Meals on Wheels for 20 years.

She worked with her daughter to develop a very successful business, Dough-si-Dough Christmas Ornaments. Her ornaments hang on trees all over the country, and she will always be remembered for her talent and bubbly personality.

Al is preceeded in death by her husband Roger K. Payne, who was the son of Byrd and "A" Payne of Lone Mountain; her grandson, Ross Lacke; and her brother, Jack Cody. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law: Amy and Frank Potts of Lake Murray, SC; Beth and Dan Owens of Raleigh, NC; Martha and Phil Albenesius of Anaheim, CA; seven grandchildren: Evan Lacke, Laura Torres, Anna Lacke, Matt Owens, Jay Owens, Will Albenesius, and Drew Albenesius; four great-grandchildren: Cody and Mason Owens, and Ashton and Lilah Rose Torres; her brother: Ernest Cody of Dandridge, TN; and Pearl Mack, her caretaker and constant friend, who has become part of her family.

A graveside service will take place at the Payne Family Cemetery at Lone Mountain on October 9 at 2pm. The family will receive guests at the nearby B.M. Payne Homestead immediately afterwards.
