Mrs. Flossie Sharp Slusher, age 95, passed away October 17th. She was the oldest child of Mary Poynter and William Murphy Sharp and born in Duff, Tennessee. She had retired at age 72 from the Bell County, Kentucky school system in which she taught for more than 50 years. Although married to a prominent Southeastern Kentucky educator, 11 years her senior; viz. William M. ("Bill") Slusher who was superintendent of Bell County Schools, she made her own contribution to Kentucky education and was recognized by the Kentucky State Teachers Association and The Commonwealth as "Teacher of the Year" in 1968. Married as a graduating high school senior, her college education was a prolonged effort of summer schools, extension courses and Saturday commutations to Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky (sixty miles round trip). She graduated Summa Cum Laude (with highest honors) and subsequently achieved her Master's degree in education. She accomplished all this while raising two sons and teaching school daily. Following her husband's death in 1988, she moved to London, Kentucky where her youngest son, Wade Slusher, lived and worked and where she assumed significant care of her two great granddaughters, Kelsey and Kaley, since their parents both worked. "Nana" was beloved by both grandchildren and great grandchildren and they learned to recognize the value of her counsel and example. In 2012, her youngest son, Wade, deceased, a loss she mourned but tolerated without complaint. She is survived by: one son, Dr. M. Madison Slusher, retired and Sarah Ward Slusher of Flat Rock, NC; a single brother, Charles Sharp and wife Ronnie Sharp of Pineville, KY. Five (5) grandchildren; Lesley Diane Slusher Schaeffer and husband Donald Carlisle Schaeffer, William Wallace Slusher and wife Joy Garland Slusher, Sara Slusher Patrick and husband Rupert Charles MacDonald Patrick, Raymond Alan Slusher and wife Eva Dinklocker Slusher, Kathryn Slusher Brown and husband Philip Thomas Brown. Seven (7) great grandchildren; Kelsey Jo Slusher Henson and husband Jason Walter Henson, Kaley Rae Slusher, Emelyn Madison Schaeffer, Madeline Townsend Schaeffer, Charles Asher MacDonald Patrick, Alexander Thomas MacDonald Patrick; and one great great grandchild; Aubree Raeland Slusher. She was a woman of unwavering Christian faith and truly an inspiration and example to her entire family. Memorial Services were Monday at 2:00 PM at the Arnett & Steele Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jerry Wright and Rev. Tim H. Mills. Interment followed in the Pineville Memorial Cemetery, Pineville. The family received friends from 1:00 PM until the service hour at the Arnett & Steele Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Pineville, which is honored to serve the Slusher Family.
