Alice Inez Dyer Bishop

Alice Inez Dyer Bishop went home to be with the Lord on, Tuesday, August 4, 2009 after a brief illness. She passed away peacefully at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, KY. “Nez” as she was affectionately called was born on November 6, 1928 in Cardinal, KY.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee Andrew and Alice Dyer; her beloved husband of 60 years, Fred Lee Bishop, siblings, Elnora Dyer, Vera Dyer, and Henry Lee
Dyer. She was also preceded in death by their youngest son, Edward Anthony Bishop, “Eddie.”
She is survived by two sisters: Gladys Brown, Roanoke, VA and Ozella Dyer, Lexington, KY. her children: Lee Bishop (Dorothy) Radcliff. KY;
Marie Bishop, Pineville, KY; Elaine Bishop Trent (Bruce) Lexington, KY, Jennifer Bishop, Cincinnati, OH, and Jan Bishop Phipps (John II) Cincinnati, OH. Grandchildren:
Edward “Toby” Bishop, Stacy and Robert Bishop, Jamie and John Phipps III,
Christian Trent; two great grandchildren and a host of other relatives.
Inez moved from Cardinal to Pineville at 11 months old after her father was accidentally killed in the coal mines. Her family later moved to Springfield, OH where she attended Schaffer Junior High and later graduated from the Roland Hayes School in Pineville, KY. At Schaffer she was an outstanding athlete and achieved school records in various sports for many years. She also attended Southeast Community College, Middlesboro, KY.
Inez accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior at age ten and was a life-long member of the Bethel Baptist Church where she served faithfully in various capacities which include; President of the Missionary Society, a Sunday school teacher, choir member, chaired church fundraisers and Youth Director. She served as the President of the London District Missionary Society and truly loved her church and enjoyed doing church work to glorify God. One of her favorite scriptures is from Psalms 121:1. “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord which made heaven and earth.” She made inspirational speeches at churches throughout the London District and her daily living habits reflected her preparation for going home to be with the Lord.
Inez worked many jobs to help support her large family. She worked in many homes in Pineville, Kingsport, TN and Lexington, KY as a domestic worker. She was a floating teacher for Bell Whitley Community Action Agency, cooked at the Pineville Community Hospital, owned a catering business, and was co-owner of Bishop’s Day Care with her husband. All of which Inez used as an opportunity to testify and praise the Lord.
Inez loved Pineville and its people; this was often shown by preparing meals for friends and family. She was active in her community with the American Cancer Societies’ Relay for Life, Pineville Athletic Boosters and the Bell County Volunteer Fire Department where she received many volunteer awards.
Inez’s greatest assets were her children. She worked hard to see that all
seven of her children graduated college. Daily she taught her children Christian values, to work hard, and to help others. She was always proud of her Day Care Children who would frequently come back to visit her.
Special Friends include: Ruth Ferguson, Fannie Chatman, Hugh, Lola, David, and Derick Delk, and Jan Gann and Glenn Thomas. Special Neighbors include: Bobby Ray Hendrickson, James “Smitty” and Quinn Smith, Mary and Jay Steele.
Funeral Information
The family will receive friends at the Arnett and Steele Funeral Home on Friday,
August 7, 2009 from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM.
The funeral will be Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the Bethel Baptist Church,
520 Tennessee Avenue, Pineville, KY and will be officiated by: Rev. John Clark, Rev.
Dr. Anthony Daniels, and the Rev. Dr. Nathaniel Young. Burial will be in the East Barbourville Cemetery, Barbourville, KY. Pallbearers will be Raymond Cloud, John Combs, David Delk, Curtis Ferguson, Jr., Harold Hill, and Christian Trent.
